How to pack books

How to pack books?

Before we start packing books, we must know the right size box for them. Books are heavy!

The book box is 1.5 cubic feet and measures 17”x12 3/8”x 12 3/8”. This box is the smallest of the standard-sized boxes, and because of that, it is the ideal choice for packing heavy items and small items.
This is one of the most common moving box sizes, and can be used for a wide variety of items.
Never pack books in big boxes. They won’t hold the weight and most people won’t be able to move them.

How to properly pack books in 3 easy steps

Step 1: Prepare the Box for Packing

If you are using new boxes, you’ll need to put them together first. Make sure you seal the bottom well by doubling the amount of tape. If you’re-using a recycled box, we recommend you always tape the bottom again with packing tape to make sure it will hold.

Make sure that each box you pack with books is under 40 pounds. Smaller sized boxes are ideal to pack with books and ensure that you do not go over this weight limit. They can also fit easier. The boxes shouldn’t have moisture in them since this weakens them. Always add double layers of packing tape on the boxes that are holding your books for added support.

Step 2:

How to Pack Hardcover Books

If the hardcover editions are of moderate value, wrap each one in packing paper before placing them in the box.

Hardcover editions can be packed by placing them in the box standing upright, spine against the box’s side, just as if you were placing them on a shelf. If you pack books this way, make sure they’re packed well, but not too tightly that they can be damaged when removing them.

Books of great value, such as old photo albums or first editions require stiff cardboard in between each to keep the spines straight and to prevent any movement. Each book should also be protected with paper and placed in a well-padded box. Bubble wrap or extra packing paper balled up can be used to line the box before you pack each book.

How to Pack Paperbacks

Hardcover editions, as well as paperbacks, can be packed flat and stacked. Both book types may also be packed spine first with the paper edges facing up. To prevent damage, do not pack books with the paper edges facing down and spines up – this will cause books to warp and pages to bend.

Books can also be packed using all three methods in one box. Just make sure you don’t pack books at odd angles.

Finally, since books can shift easily during the move, causing damage. Use wadded-up paper to fill any remaining spaces.

Step 3: Secure the Box

Fill in the spaces between the books with packing paper before you seal the box. Make sure the box is labeled and taped shut well.

That way our movers can put the boxes in their respective rooms for you.
