What is a mover’s tariff?
A mover’s tariff is a written summary of a moving company’s rates, service rules, and common charges that may apply before, during, or after a move. It helps customers understand what is included, what is not included, and what situations can affect the final cost.
Movers On Duty believes in clear, upfront pricing. This page is intended to give customers a plain-English explanation of our service terms and common moving conditions.
If the scope of work changes, the final price may also change.
Understanding Your Estimate
Movers On Duty provides estimates based on the details shared with us before the move, including the type of service, addresses, access conditions, inventory, and any special requests.
For local moves, we usually charge by the hour. The customers are billed for the actual time the crew is working ($65/hour per mover) plus a $200.00 up to $400.00 truck fee (based on actual distance). For long-distance moves, junk removal, evictions, and flat-rate jobs, pricing is based on the exact scope of work agreed to in advance.
What may be included in your move
- Professional movers
- Loading and unloading
- Use of standard moving equipment
- Basic disassembly and reassembly of standard furniture or beds when applicable
- Transportation between approved locations
- Scheduling and customer support before and during your move
What can change the final price
- More items than originally listed
- Extra stops, added addresses, or storage runs
- Undisclosed stairs, elevators, or long walking distance from truck to door
- Large, fragile, or specialty items that need extra labor or protection
- Customer-requested packing, unpacking, or disposal work at the last minute
- Delays caused by building rules, parking restrictions, or customer availability
1. Scope and application
This tariff applies to Movers On Duty household goods transportation and related accessorial services offered to the public where the shipment is arranged and paid for by the householder, or otherwise subject to 49 CFR Part 1310 and 49 U.S.C. 13702.
This tariff is written to cover local and interstate household goods transportation and related services.
2. Definitions
- Carrier means Movers On Duty, the motor carrier providing transportation and related services.
- Shipper means the customer or lawful person arranging and paying for the shipment.
- Shipment means the household goods and related items tendered for transportation or handling.
- Accessorial services means services other than linehaul transportation, including packing, unpacking, waiting time, stairs, long carry, bulky-item handling, and similar services.
- Long carry means movement between the residence or business entrance and the carrier vehicle beyond the included distance stated in this tariff.
- Bulky or special handling article means a safe, piano, oversized furniture, appliance, fitness equipment, or any item requiring unusual labor, equipment, or risk handling.
3. Service area and operating basis
Services are offered within the operating authority held by Movers On Duty. Movers On Duty operates in the DMV. The carrier may decline any shipment outside its authority, outside its practical service territory, or that requires labor, equipment, or risk assumptions not covered by this tariff or the company’s insurance program.
All charges in this tariff are stated in U.S. dollars. The applicable charge for a shipment is the sum of the base transportation charge plus all applicable accessorial, waiting, storage, valuation, and other charges listed in this tariff.
4. Rate schedule
Important Moving Guidelines and Pricing Information for Movers On Duty
Final charges cannot be determined until all items are packed and loaded. If additional items or services are added at pickup, or if the volume differs from the original estimate, a Revised Estimate must be provided and agreed to before any work begins.

5. Accessorial charges
Accessorial Services and Possible Additional Charges
Some moves require additional labor, equipment, coordination, or time beyond a standard move.
When that happens, added charges may apply.
Certificate Of Insurance COI
We provide certificates of insurance at no cost, provided you give us adequate advance notice. However, for last-minute requests—such as for the next day or the day after—there may be an additional fee determined by the insurance provider.
Stairs
Extra charges may apply when crews must carry items up or down multiple flights of stairs. Please let us know if there are stairs involved so we can include that in your exact price quote. There is no additional charge for hourly moves.
The first flight of stairs (one flight = 10 steps) is included at no charge. Each additional flight of stairs (10 steps) is:
$100 per move up to 1000 cubic feet
$200 per move over 1000 cubic feet
Elevator Delays
A $100.00/hr additional charge may apply when elevator access slows the flat-rate move or requires extended waiting time. Please reserve the elevator in advance. There is no additional charge for hourly moves.
Long Carry
Additional labor charges may apply when the truck cannot park close to the entrance. When possible, please reserve us parking close to the entrance or reserve the loading dock. There is no additional charge for hourly moves.
When the distance is greater than 50 feet, the long carry charge will be $100 per 100 feet for moves up to 1000 cubic feet and $200 per 100 feet for moves over 1000 cubic feet (a one-time fee.)
Bulky or Heavy Items
Pianos, safes, oversized furniture, gym equipment, and similar items may require special pricing. We can absolutely move them — no problem.
However, these items must be disclosed in advance. If they are only mentioned upon arrival, additional charges will apply.
Smaller or lighter items that were not listed will typically be accommodated without extra cost, but bulky or heavy items require specialized equipment and additional manpower.
Exclusive use of the vehicle
Transporting an entire household long distance is a complex logistical process. Consolidating shipments is a common practice that allows moving companies to operate efficiently.
At Movers On Duty, we prefer offering exclusive use of the transport vehicle at no additional charge.
Premium guaranteed delivery service. You should have a clear understanding of the delivery window. In many cases, delivery windows could be up to 10 days or longer. If you need your property by a certain date, then you must check with your moving consultant for pricing.
Packing and Materials
Boxes, shrink wrap, tape, mattress covers, packing paper, and labor for packing are billed separately but may be available at an additional fixed fee.
The full packing service fee is $1.10 per cubic foot when selected at the time of booking. If added on the day of pickup, the rate increases to **$2.20 per cubic foot** for long-distance moves.
For local moves or packing-only jobs, we charge $58.33 per hour per packer, plus a set fee for packing supplies based on your specific needs.
For unpacking jobs, we only charge the same hourly rate plus a $50.00 removal fee if the client wants us to remove the packing supplies from the property.
Shuttle or Limited Access
If a full-size truck cannot reach the property, a smaller shuttle vehicle may be required at extra cost. (Estimated cost $200.00)
Examples of additional services
- Packing or unpacking services
- Furniture protection beyond standard handling (Crating or custom protection for fragile items)
- Additional pickup or delivery locations
- Waiting time caused by access delays or unavailable customer contact
- Disposal or junk removal requested in addition to moving service
Extra pickup / cancelation
No cancellation or rescheduling fee unless a non-refundable specialty reservation is stated in writing. For example, for evictions which is the only service that requires a deposit to confirm the reservation.
Extra pickup or dropoff fees may apply if you’d like us to make additional stops.
6. Minimum charges and deposits
Local labor-only and local moving services with truck are subject to a two-hour minimum labor charge unless a written exact-price quote states otherwise. Interstate, long-distance, eviction, cleanout, and specialty-item moves may be quoted as fixed-price services instead of hourly services.
General moving services may be reserved without a deposit unless Movers On Duty states otherwise in writing. For eviction services, a reservation may be held without deposit and then confirmed the day before service, consistent with company policy. Any prepaid amount not expressly stated as non-refundable will be applied as a service credit when permitted by the written quote or service agreement.
7. Estimates, revisions, and unforeseen conditions
Any estimate provided before the move is based on the information supplied by the shipper and conditions reasonably visible or disclosed before service. Charges may be revised when shipment size, access conditions, waiting time, service requests, special handling needs, or other material facts differ from what was originally represented.
Examples of revised-charge triggers include undisclosed stairs, long carry, additional packing, oversized items, storage requests, unsafe working conditions, elevator restrictions, road or truck-access limitations, delays caused by building management, or customer-requested additions during service.
7A. Exact-price quote rules
For any service sold on an exact-price basis, including certain long-distance, eviction, or specialty-item jobs, the written exact-price quote becomes part of this tariff and states the precise charge for the described job. The quoted price remains binding only if the shipment scope, addresses, access conditions, service date, declared inventory, and requested services remain materially the same as represented at booking.
If the shipper adds services, changes inventory, changes locations, requests additional stops, requires dump disposal, or presents materially different access conditions, Movers On Duty may revise the charge using this tariff’s hourly, accessorial, or specialty-item rates, or may issue a written revised exact-price quote before continuing.
8. Payment terms

9. Liability and valuation
This tariff includes a basic valuation option and an optional higher declared value election. If these terms are incorporated by reference into the bill of lading, the shipper must receive the required summary notice. Final valuation language should be reviewed with counsel and insurance before adoption.
| Valuation option | Charge | Summary for bill of lading notice |
| Released value / basic coverage | Included at no additional charge | Basic carrier valuation is included at the level stated in the bill of lading and applicable law; shippers should read that notice carefully before signing. |
| Higher declared value option | By written election and charge stated on quote | If available, the shipper may elect higher declared value coverage in writing before service begins and pay the stated additional charge. |
Liability Options:
- Full Value Protection (FVP): Covers repair, replacement, or compensation (additional cost).
- Limited Liability: $0.60 per pound per item at no additional charge.
10. Claims
Claims for loss or damage must be filed in writing within nine months after delivery, or within nine months after a reasonable time for delivery has elapsed if the shipment is not delivered. Any lawsuit or civil action must be commenced within two years and one day from the date the carrier gives written notice that it has disallowed all or part of the claim. These claim restrictions must be separately summarized on or with the bill of lading if incorporated by reference.
Claims:
Any claims for loss, damage, or overcharges must be filed in writing within 9 months after delivery.
EXTRAORDINARY VALUE INVENTORY: All items included in your shipment that are considered to be of unusual value must be specifically identified and Movers On Duty must be advised that they are included in the shipment; in other words, you must declare items having a value greater than $100 per pound. Such items include but are not limited to currency, coins, jewelry, precious metals and stones, china sets, fashion clothes, antiques, objects of art, oriental rugs, electronics, computer software programs, and other rare documents.
FILING OF CLAIMS: As a condition precedent to recovery, a claim for loss, damage, delay, overcharge, or property damage must be filed in writing with the office within nine months after delivery. Note: We work tirelessly to ensure that your move goes smoothly. Our claims rate is less than half of the moving industry average. We go the extra mile to ensure that all your belongings are protected. Our goal is to resolve any claim from 30 to 90 days from the day relevant documentation and images were submitted to info@moversonduty.com
ARBITRATION PROGRAM:
If an issue arises, you should first attempt to resolve the dispute directly with the company. If a resolution cannot be reached, you have two options:
- Request an arbitration hearing
- Initiate legal action against the mover
Federal regulations require movers to offer an arbitration program or another legal process to handle disputes involving property loss, damage, or additional charges beyond those collected at delivery.
If you choose arbitration, you must contact the mover to request a hearing. They are required to participate if your claim is $10,000 or less. For claims exceeding $10,000, the mover may decline arbitration, leaving legal action as your primary option. Arbitration may involve a fee, typically shared between both parties, although the arbitrator can decide who is responsible for the cost.
If you choose to file a lawsuit, you must serve legal documents to the mover’s process agent in your state. A process agent is the designated representative authorized to receive legal papers on behalf of the moving company.
To locate a process agent, visit:
https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/process-agents
Arbitration is an alternative to courtroom litigation and may be a method to resolve disputes faster, less expensively, and more than traditional courtroom litigation.
